Chapter Five

They’d been at the country estate for two weeks, and Octavia had been kept busy. There had been no time for boredom, and she was grateful.

The family hosted several gatherings, which made for busy days of preparation, which she and the other governesses were called to help with.

Lady Mackenzie loved to entertain, and every spring, she hosted a number of gatherings that would bring guests, who would remain for two or three days, enjoying the many activities the estate granted.

The men enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, and shooting competitions, while the women spent leisurely days reading, playing games, or taking long strolls.

Grantham had kept his distance when others were present but took advantage of any instances of privacy to assure her he planned to speak to his family. Despite his constant reassurances, with each passing day, Octavia grew nervous of what would happen. Thankfully the daily activities kept her mind occupied.

For two days, she’d sought hidden areas in the garden, or remained in her room when not tending to her charges. Needing time to assess things, she needed time away from Grantham, even cutting the boy’s nightly routine to avoid him.
